From Bishop Louttit:

After years of visitations, this bishop is concerned that presenting Lay Minister crosses during the service lengthens it more than is desirable if there are numerous confirmations and baptisms.  I suggest the alternative practice of presenting the crosses at the reception following the service when there is a sizable group of confirmands.  I do think that the bishop recognizing them in the context of the congregation gives the Licensed Lay Ministers some presence, which is important. +HIL

Vocations to Ordained Ministry: We have twenty-nine people in discernment! Seventeen interested in the diaconate, nine in the priesthood and three are still sorting out their call. In addition, we have ten people in seminary moving towards priesthood, five in formation for the Diocesan Track/Priesthood, and seven in formation for the diaconate.

We are very thankful for these people offering their lives to serve the Church in ordained ministry. Along the way, through discernment or life events, some may not be ordained; however, this is a wonderful sign of life in our congregations in this year of Our Lord 2006.

At the time of my election, I told you of my hope to have one deacon for every fifty people in each congregation. We're not there yet! We have ordained a fair number but one of the ongoing realities of life is that, as we add people, others become incapacitated or move. The numeric gain may not be significant; nonetheless, the dedication of the deacons we have is wonderful and I'm hopeful that their example will encourage others to step forward and test their vocation. +HIL

Additional Assisting Bishop

The Rt. Rev. Rodney R. Michel, Retired Suffragan Bishop of Long Island will be assisting Bishop Henry Louttit with his visitations this winter 2007.

A graduate of the University of Nebraska (BS, 1965) and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary (M. Div., 1970), Bishop Michel served in Gordon and Scottsbluff, Nebraska, his home diocese, for twelve years before accepting a call to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he served for five.  In 1987 he was called to Long Island to be Canon Pastor of the Cathedral.  From there he was called as Rector of St. Peter's in Bay Shore, New York. He was elected in 1997 to be Suffragan Bishop of Long Island. Bishop Michel chairs the Committee For Bishop Visitors To Our Episcopal Monastic Orders.

Bishop Michel is looking forward to seeing a new area of our country. From his years in the Midwest, he understands long distances. And he enjoys smaller congregations, which he says, he experienced there and even on Long Island.

We look forward to his being with us January through March 2007, and being involved in our life in a number of different ways. Please give the bishop and his wife, Marie, a warm welcome into our diocese. The Michels, who are currently in the process of moving to their retirement home in Pennsylvania, have four grown children.

2007 Convention: "Lively Hearts Reaching Out In Love"

Information can be found on our website www.georgia.anglican.org

As a part of presenting progress on the Together We Grow initiative at the Diocesan Convention this coming February the Diocese of Georgia wants to celebrate the ministries underway in our 71 churches. To this we need photos, lots of photos. But we don't want empty buildings; we want to see people actively engaged in ministry. What is it that your church is doing to impact your community? Get photos of those activities and email them to contact@kingofpeace.org. The photos must be digital files (JPG preferred) at least 640x480 pixels and should be less than 1 MB in size if you can help it. Though we will also accept group photos from events, we are really looking for people actively engaged in everything from children's church to scouting, from soup kitchens to parades and more. We want to share the very lively heart of our diocese reaching out in love. Photos are due by December 15, 2006.

In addition to the above, we are creating an artistic accompaniment to our convention worship. This will be not so different from the visual preludes created by Episcopal Church and the Visual Arts (www.ecva.org) for the General Convention. While we want Christian art that goes with the theme Together We Grow, any thoughtful art inspired by your faith journey is encouraged. We also need digital photos of the artwork, though we encourage larger file sizes for this show and they should be at least 1000 pixels along the long side of the image. These should also be emailed to contact@kingofpeace.org with a deadline of December 31, 2006.

What's New

Plenty! Check the Calendar above and click on an event for more details.

Free to a good home: St. George's, Savannah has been given a Konica Model 2223 Copier. It sorts, collates, duplexes etc.  They already have a newer machine and don't need two, so if your mission/parish needs but can't afford one, call. Two stipulations: 1) copier must be picked up from St. George's (they only deliver the Gospel); and 2) if it's still in good working order when no longer needed that it gets passed on to another parish/mission. Please have your rector/vicar/warden in charge contact Fr. Jim Parker at 912.604.4330/912.925.6517.

From the Commission on Christian Formation: The Theological Education for All website provides many opportunities for parishioners to continue Christian formation and theological education, both formally and/or informally. The website's new look brings ease to finding an expanded selection of downloadable resources to help visitors explore spirituality and the Christian faith. "We wanted to make the site easier to use, enrich the content, and increase the number of links, articles and downloadable resources on the site," said the Rev. Lynne A. Grifo, associate coordinator in the Office of Ministry Development.

New collect for Together We Grow, composed by the Rev. Peter Ingeman: O Lord Our God, we give you thanks for the many gifts you have bestowed upon the Diocese of Georgia, for the faith and dedication of its clergy and laity, and for the gift of the talents abounding in its parishes and missions. Give us, we pray, the wit and the will to identify and use those talents to shape our diocese to be what you would have it be and to serve you ever better as together, we grow. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving Appeal: In November of every year a small gold envelope with a request to make a contribution to the Episcopal Youth and Children's Services is mailed to every parishioner. These funds are distributed back to the youth of the Diocese of Georgia and assist them with financial needs.  In 2006 this unique fund allowed 19 children to attend Camp Honey Creek, it helped send 27 of our youth off to college and awarded one medical grant. At Thanksgiving, there is a special joy in sharing your blessings and the EYCS hopes each of you will support our youth at this time. EYCS is so thankful for your generous support and wish all of you a blessed Thanksgiving
